HISTORY OF EL HIERRO

In the second century, Ptolemy considered that Zero Meridian passed through the eastern most side of the island or the "end of the earth", and remained as such until it was moved to Greenwich, England.

The first settlers on El Hierro were the Bimbaches, a peaceful group who possessed a complex social structure despite living in a Neolithic culture.

At the beginning of the 15 th century, while the rest of the archipelago was taken over by the Castillians, the Norman Jean de Bethencourt, conquered El Hierro. Faced with little resistance from the aboriginals, peasants from mainland Spain quickly colonized the islands and in no time mixed with the native population.

  LOS BIMBACHES

Like all the native peoples of the archipelago, the origin of the Bimbache of El Hierro continues to be shrouded in mystery.

However, they have bequeathed numerous petroglyphs that can still be admired at different sites throughout the island, and to this day remain undeciphered.
