At the beginning of the 15 th century, while the rest of the archipelago was taken over by the Castillians, the Norman Jean de Bethencourt, conquered El Hierro. Faced with little resistance from the aboriginals, peasants from mainland Spain quickly colonized the islands and in no time mixed with the native population.
