FAUNA OF EL HIERRO

The main attraction is the giant lizard (Gallotia simonyi manchadoi) which lives exclusively on the island of El Hierro. This reptile, rather robust of brown black colour, measures around 60 cm and can weigh over 400 grams.

Its size is rather notable if compared to the island's common lizard at 20 cm long and 10 grams. Although its growth is slow, it can live up to 20 years. The adult lizard is basically a vegetarian but completes its diet with some insects.

The giant lizard lives in the Fuga de Gorreta and is protected by law. However, a few can be seen in the specially designed terrariums in Guinea at the Centro de Recuperación del Lagarto de Salmor (Salmor Lizard Recuperation Centre).

The natural wealth of El Hierro can also be found at the bottom of the sea: Mar de las Calmas (Calm Sea) located between La Restinga and Punta Orchilla, as its name implies, is characterized by calm, clear waters; a true Eden for divers.

Underwater shelves, caves, summits and drops are habitats for barracuda, grouper, parrot fish, angelshark, etc. as well as open water species such as mantas, tuna, turtles and sharks (ocassionally).
